Good luck Dan and Mick

It’s just over a week before two well-known local firefighters put their bodies to the test in the interests of charity.

Former local Jordan Simpson and his stepfather Dan (Mick) Moylan will compete in the Melbourne Firefighters Stair Climb next Saturday.

Dressed in full kit and carrying 25kg on their backs, as well as breathing apparatus, they will take on 28 flights of stairs at Melbourne’s Crown Metropol Hotel.

Jordan competed last year, completing the challenge in an amazing six minutes – a time he wants to better this time around.

Dan will be making his stair climb debut, but if you know this duo his ambition is to better anything Jordan produces.

The lads are not just tackling the stairs for fun and rivalry, they will be raising funds for the 000 Foundation, Peter McCallum Institute and Lifeline.

To support the duo in their quest, you can go to www.firefighterclimb.org.au/donations/donate and type in the name of the person you wish to support.

Otherwise Kaylene or Lee would happily take your money on their behalf.

Members and prospective members of the Mathoura RSL Sub-Branch are reminded that they have a meeting tonight.

The 6pm meeting will be held in the War Memorial Hall at the corner of Lawrence and Mathoura Streets.

The organisation is renowned for its Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, as well as poppy drives and care of those who have served.

A large contingent of players turned out for Mathoura Bowling Club’s final winter tournament for 2023 last weekend.

The Mathoura Redgum Classic 2 Bowl Triples event, sponsored by Tongala & District Community Branch and Mathoura Agency of the Bendigo Bank, attracted 28 teams from near and far.

Winners of the two day event were Gayle Kerr and her composite team, and runners-up were G Beckham’s team from Golden Square.

Third place went to Jo Bovell and her team from Deniliquin, Ken Main’s team took home fourth and Wayne Hudson’s Lalor team placed fifth.

Congratulations to all prize winners and all who assisted in making the event such a huge success.

Luck was not with Mathoura’s netballers when they contested the second semi finals at Blighty last weekend.

However, tomorrow is another day and we wish them well as they return to the courts for the preliminary finals and hopefully make their way into the grand finals.

Good luck girls.

Full marks to the two local guys who are hoping to get kids interested in cricket.

Anthony Hadley and Anthony Hogg are anxious to hear from youngsters under 14 with a view to teaching them the skills of the game.

If enough interest is shown, they may establish an under-14s competition side.

The proposal is open to both boys and girls, so if your kids are interested, get in touch with the guys.

You never know, they might produce another Todd Murphy.

Speaking of Todd, it was great to catch up with his parents Jamie and Paula, and grandparents Raymond and Marilyn, last week.

The grandparents had recently returned from holidays up north while Paula and Jamie had returned from watching Todd play in England.

Everyone was thrilled to talk to them about ‘Our Todd’.

As a third generation member of a Mathoura family, we have to have some claim to him and what he has achieved to date – and what lies ahead.
