Adoption fees for cats over one year old at the Shepparton Animal Shelter have been cut in half for a limited time to try to clear an influx of abandoned or lost pets.

Greater Shepparton City Council said the fees had been reduced to $50 until Friday, April 22.

Council director sustainable development Geraldine Christou said numbers flowing into shelters across the state had increased in the past few months, including at the city’s shelter on Wanganui Rd.

“With an increased number of cats and kittens at the animal shelter, we are encouraging individuals looking for a new pet to consider adoption,” she said.

“Our staff are working hard to find the right home for each animal, and want to ensure every new home is long lasting and the right fit.”

The price for kittens is $100 and $50 for cats. All animals are vet checked, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and treated for worms and fleas.
