Maple syrup was flowing and smiles were aplenty at St Mel’s Primary School in Shepparton on Tuesday, March 1, as staff and students enjoy plenty of delicious pancakes.

Shrove Tuesday — also known as pancake Tuesday — is the day before Ash Wednesday and the start Lent.

More than 500 pancakes were cooked with the help of Grade 6 social justice leaders, teachers and staff.

Students made a gold coin donation to enjoy the pancakes, with funds raised going to Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion.

Religious education leader Danae Napier said all hands were on deck when it came to preparing the pancake feast.

“It was great for the school community to come together again, it was a struggle with restrictions over the past couple of years,” she said.

“But today we continued community building and finding the joy, that was the best part.”

Starting this year on March 2, Lent marks the 40 days leading up to Easter.

Students will take part in Lent-related activities in the classroom, with prayers and learning of almsgiving.
