Ask a Tech | Stay safe and secure: why antivirus protection is a must

“Do I need antivirus protection on my phone?”

This is a question I’m frequently asked and it’s important to address the evolving threat landscape we face today.

In the past, having antivirus on phones might not have been a pressing concern, but times have changed and our digital devices need comprehensive protection.

Malware has become more sophisticated over the years, with cybercriminals targeting popular devices with their malicious codes.

When I advise people that they indeed need antivirus protection on their phones, they often respond with the belief that their phones contain only personal photos, implying that they have nothing of value to protect.

However, the reality is that smartphones have become an integral part of our lives, and they hold much more than just pictures.

Think about how frequently you use your phone for various activities in public spaces — banking, checking emails, social media, making payments and transferring money.

We rely heavily on our phones and that makes them appealing targets for cybercriminals.

The threat landscape has shifted and data has become the new currency.

Personal information — such as usernames, passwords and emails — is now being traded on the dark web.

Even Apple products, once considered relatively immune to malware, are no longer safe from attacks.

Malware creators design their malicious software to extract data from devices seamlessly.

Once your phone is compromised, it can be used to steal all your contact information and passwords for apps and websites.

The stolen data is then sent to servers controlled by malicious actors.

Data breaches have been on the rise, with countless user details being compromised at an alarming rate.

Cybercriminals use stolen phone numbers in phishing scams to target unsuspecting individuals.

A simple click on a malicious link in a text message can infect your phone and subsequently spread to your contacts, making it appear as if the messages are coming from you.

Choosing the right protection for your devices is crucial.

I recommend visiting reputable retailers like Officeworks, Harvey Norman, or JB Hi-Fi to seek advice from their staff members on finding suitable security software.

Most modern security solutions cover multiple devices, including Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, all under the same license.

Security software can safeguard you against the most common attack vectors, such as malicious emails and texts.

Inadvertently clicking on a link can have disastrous consequences, but with proper protection in place, you can minimise the risks.

I hope this article has provided you with valuable insights into the importance of securing your devices.
