It’s called automotive refinishing; I’d just call it spray painting.
What business do you work for?
I work for Heywoods Shepparton Motor Panel. They’re just down Lockwood Rd.
How many years of your apprenticeship have you completed?
I finished two weeks ago, and I have done it for three and a bit years.
What is your previous work background?
This is my first job. My dad’s a spray painter, and I’ve always tinkered around with cars as a kid.
Did you grow up in the Goulburn Valley?
I grew up in Tallygaroopna, but I moved to Shepparton when I was 16 by myself.
What do you like about the job?
I enjoy that I get to paint cars. I think mostly what I enjoy is the people. You can make good mates who have the same passion. So mostly the people and the skills you get from it.
What do you find challenging about the job?
Hot days around Christmas time when it’s busy. The pressure, too — you’re expected to do a lot within a certain amount of time. Things could go badly very quickly; someone could have a hiccup and take us back an hour with the job.
Why did you choose the apprenticeship you’re doing?
As well as my dad being a spray painter, my mum was a tattoo artist, so as a kid, I’d take her ink and use it on my Hot Wheels. My dad also collected cars and painted them, and I thought it was the coolest thing, and he suggested that I start it if I’m interested in it.
What are your goals within your trade?
Get pushed to my absolute limit and be able to do as many things as possible within the trade.
Coffee, iced coffee or juice first thing in the morning?
Iced coffee.
Shorts in winter, yes or no?
Absolutely.
MAFS, Love Island or 730?
I don’t watch any of them.
