Bake sale supports Goulburn Valley blokes with prostate cancer

A sweet deal that supports Goulburn Valley blokes with prostate cancer has arrived – but you’ll have to be quick.

Shepparton’s Isabella Mangiameli is holding a bake sale, raising funds for Goulburn Valley Health’s prostate cancer nurses as part of an assessment for her third-year nursing studies.

The fundraiser has been running for the past week, with plenty of people getting on board.

“So far we’ve had about 40 orders and I’m aiming for about 100, so it’s going really well so far,” Miss Mangiameli said.

“I wanted to keep the money raised in the region to support people in our community, so I decided to raise money for the prostate cancer nurses at GV Health.”

Fifty per cent of sales funds will be donated to the GV Health prostate cancer nurses - a service that is completely community funded with the flagship event being the annual Biggest Ever Blokes’ Lunch which was postponed this year.

The bake sale ties in perfectly with the lead-up to Prostate Cancer Month and when Shepparton’s Biggest Ever Blokes’ Lunch was originally slated to go ahead – a sheer coincidence Miss Mangiameli said.

“It was just luck. I was speaking with (prostate cancer nurse) Sonia Strachan and realised it was coming into Prostate Cancer Month and deliveries taking place the day after the Blokes’ Lunch was originally scheduled,” she said.

“It’s more prevalent in the community than I realised, so it’s also about helping to spread the message about prostate cancer as well.”

Orders close at noon on Tuesday, August 24, with pick up from the Woolshed at Emerald Bank on August 28.
