Intereach volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty at Seven Creeks Park in Kialla on Wednesday, July 31, planting about 100 trees as part of the One Tree Per Child program.
The program, a joint effort with Greater Shepparton City Council, hopes to see every child plant their first tree before they leave school.
Intereach workplace health, safety and environment manager Reiner Laan highlighted the significance of the event, which is the company’s first in Shepparton.
“Our volunteers are not just planting trees, they are planting the seeds of a healthier, greener future for our community,” Mr Laan said.
The tree-planting effort is just one piece of Intereach’s ambitious environmental journey to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 43 per cent by 2030.
It is already making headway, having trimmed back emissions by six per cent in just four years by minimising travel, installing solar panels, transitioning its vehicle fleet to hybrid models and more — including the tree-planting events.
Mr Laan said the actions were “not only for the environment but also for the health and wellbeing of our community”, as communities are increasingly affected by climate change, facing risks from pollution, floods and fires.
“The adverse environmental conditions may lead to health issues such as respiratory problems, allergies and stress, impacting both community members and Intereach staff,” Mr Laan said.
“By being responsible custodians of the environment, minimising our impact and adopting eco-friendly practices, we reduce our carbon footprint and preserve the natural ecosystem for the community and future generations.”
