Even Santa Paws needs to be kept safe from Christmas decorations this festive season.
As we begin to deck the halls and prepare our homes for the festivities, it is important to choose decorations that will keep prying paws safe from harm.
Pet Insurance Australia has highlighted some key tips to ensure Santa’s little helpers stay safe in your home.
“Dogs are notorious for eating things they shouldn’t, and during the holiday season, the risk only increases,” Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia said.
“The sight of shiny tinsel, baubles, and twinkling lights can tempt pets into chewing or swallowing dangerous items, potentially leading to costly vet visits or serious health complications.”
To keep your curious cats and daring dogs safe, Pet Insurance Australia recommends:
Choosing pet-friendly decorations
“Opt for shatterproof ornaments and avoid tinsel or items with small parts that could be swallowed,” Ms Crighton said.
She also warns that cats particularly love playing with shiny tinsel, which can cause blockages if ingested.
Ribbons, bells and small decorations also impose a choking hazard.
Keep the Christmas tree secure
Ms Crighton recommends keeping your tree anchored to prevent tipping, as well as keeping paws off breakable ornaments by placing them out of reach.
Keep holiday treats out of reach
“Holiday favourites like chocolate, grapes, sultanas, raisins, onions and garlic are toxic to dogs,” she said.
Don’t leave these tempting treats unattended at Christmas, and instead distract drooling dogs with toys or their own treats.
Make sure your home is also pet proof by keeping all hazardous items out of reach, so every creature big and small can have a safe and happy holiday season.
