Two Kyabram locals recently took part in Carman’s Fun Run in Melbourne but they didn’t do it for the run itself.
They did it for their grandmother who has breast cancer.
Rachel Dullard and Maddison Smith had been training together for a year before competing in a 21.1km run in February.
“They did it because it’s for breast cancer and they wanted to do a decent marathon to see if they could do it, which they did,” Maddison’s mum, Faith Stanyer, said.
“I was quite proud of them.”
The pair had been fundraising on Facebook and had raised a total of about $2600 for Breast Cancer Network Australia.
It wasn’t smooth sailing, however, with one of the young women getting COVID-19 a week before the race and the other having a dislocated knee.
However, the 23-year-old cousins still got out there and ran.
“They were really determined. Nothing was going to stop them from doing the race,” Ms Stanyer said.
“She [the cousins’ grandmother] was so proud of them and was very overcome because she was told at Christmas that they were doing this and she was quite emotional that they did such a huge thing for her.”
