Victorian Seniors Festival is well and truly under way, with events throughout this month.
To celebrate the festival, The News chatted to students and staff at Mooroopna Park Primary School about their favourite memories with their grandparents. Here’s what they had to say.
Oliver Webb
My favourite thing to do with my pop is go on the motorbike. Last trip, we went with his mob and we went to the border. Also, when I was five years old, I went to a theme park with Nan and Pop and I went on a big ride. I was a bit scared but my pop encouraged me. When I was even younger, maybe three years old, Nan and Pop took me to a zoo and we got to feed some animals.

On Saturday mornings I used to go to my grandpa’s work and he would take me out to a fancy restaurant and I would get spaghetti and a raspberry spider every week. My grandpa was Scottish and he had a thick accent, and he would say Gaelic words and phrases that I didn’t understand. He also had a very sarcastic and dry sense of humour that went over my head when I was little.

My grandparents are Aboriginal and my nan works at Rumbalara. They’re Yorta Yorta people, I think. My siblings and I went to a Rumbalara event and there was this ride and me and my brother went on it. They cook me food but I can’t think of a favourite because they’re all good. They also make jokes and play games with me and take me to the movies sometimes.

I really like my pop, I go see him lots. My favourite thing to do with him is going fishing together. The last trip we did was at Mallacoota, which is like eight hours away, near the border. We went with some of Pop’s friends and I caught three flatheads — big ones, too. He’s been with me since I was a child and he makes me laugh. He cooks me steak every week, which is my favourite meal.
