Greater Shepparton’s Velodrome is gearing up for a brighter future, with lighting upgrades set to begin following the awarding of a $183,139 contract to local business Watters Electrical Pty Ltd.

The decision was confirmed at Greater Shepparton City Council's November meeting.

“Congratulations to Watters Electrical on being awarded this contract,” City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said.

“It is fantastic to see this money reinvested back into the community to support local businesses.”

The project will upgrade the lighting on the Velodrome’s four existing towers to meet AusCycling’s 300 LUX standard, a key requirement for local club training, competitions, and major events.

This enhanced lighting will also support areas for BMX events, including warm-up zones, team pits, and pre-event staging areas.

The Velodrome improvements are part of a broader push to elevate Shepparton’s standing as a hub for regional sports.

“Upgrading the lighting at the Shepparton Cycling Velodrome is an important step in supporting our local cycling community and enhancing Greater Shepparton’s reputation as a premier sporting destination,” Cr Sali said.

“These improvements will ensure the velodrome meets the needs of local clubs for training and competition, while also accommodating major events which attract participants and visitors to our region.”

Funded through the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, the upgrades also include the construction of the Shepparton BMX Multi-Use Events Pavilion and improvements to the BMX Start Hill and Track, with work on these projects already under way.

Scheduled to kick off in December, the lighting upgrades are expected to be finished before Christmas.

This timeline ensures minimal disruption to community activities and event schedules, with the improved facility ready in time for the Shepparton Cycling Club Christmas Track Carnival later that month.
