Throw in a line and sleep under the stars when you combine a spot of fishing with a camping adventure.

If you’re looking to go camping and fishing, head one-and-a-half hours south of Shepparton for a weekend at Lake Eildon.

The Murray cod population is booming right now, and monsters larger than 110cm are being caught every week.

But be quick — cod season closes on August 31 and the iconic fish will be off limits until December 1.

But there’s also a lot of big, fat trout choking the waterways of Victoria’s largest freshwater lake.

Just using some basic powerbait you can expect to catch trout up to 15kg with ease.

On Saturday, September 3 the Eildon Fishing Festival will see seven tonnes of hatchery fish being released to further replenish the already abundant stocks.

Eildon has plenty of accommodation options, including some great campgrounds.

Fraser Camping Area

Fraser is Lake Eildon’s main camping area and is perfect for families, with more modern facilities and conveniences.

The Fraser Camping Area is set around Coller Bay and comprises Candlebark, Lakeside and Devil Cove campgrounds.

The site accommodates tents, caravans and campervans, and it also has a boat launching area for water activities.

Wake up to the sights and sounds of native birds and grazing kangaroos and explore the national park on the Coller Bay Walking Trail that links all the campgrounds.

Jerusalem Creek Campground

The Jerusalem Creek Campground lies on the southern edge of Lake Eildon.

It’s the perfect place to swim or launch a canoe, kayak or boat from the nearby boat ramp.

If you're an avid angler, both rainbow and brown trout are plentiful throughout the lake system and the occasional Murray cod can be seen jumping from the water.

Jerusalem Creek is for tents only, so is suited for a seasoned camper, but offers a more serene and peaceful experience.
