Have you been paying attention? Urzila Carlson is coming to town.
She’s taking her tour regional, with Shepparton making the cut and it’s just around the corner.
“This show is called Just Jokes, because every year I try and write a theme, or I try and do jokes around a theme,” Carlson said.
“But this year I'm like, ‘No, I just want to do jokes’.
“And then it sort of is around a theme, but you have to come and see the show to see that.”
She said she was excited to come to Shepparton, but we’re not sure it’s true love just yet.
“We got the venue and I'm not going to say I love Shepparton, but I like it deeply,” she said.
“So I thought, ‘Yeah, I'll go back’.”
Audiences who know Carlson through her work on panel shows should buckle up for a brand-new vibe, she said.
“People who have only ever seen me on panel shows, it's a little bit wilder than that because panel shows get edited and on sort of handbrakes as to what I can and cannot say because, you know, it's a family show, like, kids watch it,” Carlson said.
“But of course, it's wilder than that, so if you're coming in expecting just that, you know, what you see on a panel show, you're going to have a great night."
Carlson’s journey to stand-up comedy wasn’t straightforward, originally working in the newspaper printing industry. But she’s grateful for the places it’s taken her, she said.
“I only started doing stand-up when I was 32 years old,” Carlson said.
“I kind of stumbled into it and when I started doing stand-up, I thought, ‘okay, well, this is it’.
“I've done a lot of stuff, and I every time I'm like, ‘Wow, this is a thing’ and I'm always amazed at the stuff with comedy.
“100 per cent, hands down, my first love, my main love, my true wife is stand-up comedy.”
If you come to the show, Carlson (almost) promises a good time.
“I mean, we're going to have a good time, and I can't guarantee it, obviously, but I 98 per cent reckon we're going to have the best time,” she said.
“I can't wait to come live it up in Shepparton.”
