The building at 67 Fryers St has a rich and varied dining history, fondly remembered by locals.

Many recall the days of the Hurco Café, with nostalgic memories as delightful as its famous blue heaven milkshakes and the great fish and chips for which the Georgy family was well-known.

Situated just a stumble away from the Aussie’s Saloon Bar, it became an evening staple after the six o’clock closing, feeding many patrons.

It was also well known for the local lads who often lounged outside, exchanging spirited remarks to passers-by for their own amusement.

Since the Hurco Café closed, the space has transformed several times.

Letizia’s Café Bar Restaurant extensively renovated the location and was there from 2002 to 2017, followed by Aangan and now Zaika.

The evolving multicultural influences at this address reflect the diverse and inclusive character of our community, making it all the more vibrant and enriched.

Zaika Indian Cuisine embodies Shepparton’s multicultural food heritage, bringing the vibrant flavours of India to locals and visitors alike.

Meaning ‘delicious’ in Hindi, Zaika has been a favourite since its opening in March 2020, even amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now located at 67 Fryers St after moving from 276 Wyndham St in March 2023, Zaika has only expanded its loyal following.

Zaika offers both dine-in and takeout options, with daily dinner hours from 5pm to 9:30pm and lunch service from 11am to 2:30pm, Thursday through Sunday.

Its extensive menu showcases classic north Indian dishes, including butter chicken, rogan josh, biryani and korma, each crafted with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Zaika’s commitment to supporting local farmers brings vibrant flavours to every dish, capturing the essence of the community.

Catering to diverse dietary needs, Zaika provides halal options and a wide range of gluten-free dishes, making it accessible for everyone.

The ground floor seats up to 70 guests in a warm, inviting space ideal for family gatherings and casual dining.

For private events, the vintage cellar accommodates up to 60 guests and is perfect for celebrations, with an option for an all-you-can-eat buffet.

A fully licensed bar adds a variety of beverages to complement the meal.

Recently, Zaika has introduced an Indian Street Food section, bringing a lively touch of India’s street culture with unique dishes such as kulhad pizza, Nepali veg momo, Mumbai pav bhaji and Jaipuri kachori.

Zaika’s catering service further extends its offerings, providing customisable menus and buffet-style platters for weddings, corporate events and family gatherings.

At Zaika Indian Cuisine, every dish is an experience, whether dining in, celebrating in the cellar or savouring the flavours at home.

We dined with our friends Ros Winzar and Damian Drum and were thoroughly impressed by the warm, welcoming staff and the delicious food.

We started with the vegetable samosa and aloo tikki (potato patty), served with a flavourful yoghurt and roasted herb dressing.

For our mains, we shared the marinated lamb chops, rich rogan josh in a creamy tomato curry, and a hot and spicy butter chicken, all accompanied by steamed rice and naan.

The wine and drinks menu offered great options, perfectly complementing the meal.

We loved the food, company and overall experience — and highly recommend this spot as a food destination!
