Cool camping spots

HITCHING UP THE VAN AND HEADING TO THE RIVER IS THE IDEAL BREAK FOR MANY FAMILIES, YOUNG OR OLD, JUST THE TWO OF YOU OR THE WHOLE TRIBE INCLUDING COUSINS, WITH OR WITHOUT THEIR FRIENDLY FUR-FRIEND TAGGING ALONG.

At What’s On, we have compiled a list of free and low-cost camping spots suitable for tents, campers, caravans and RVs.

You will find a spot in the bush, along the river or close to town to suit everybody.

Aysons Reserve — 799 Burnewang Rd, Burnewang

On the banks of the Campaspe River, halfway between Rochester and Elmore, you can camp for free for up to three days without a permit and 28 days with.

There are toilets but no showers or BBQ stations, so you must bring your own supplies.

Lockington Travellers Rest — Lockington Rd, Lockington

You don’t need a permit to overnight camp at Lockington Travellers Rest, but you do for two or more days.

Before you arrive, call the Travellers Rest on 0447 787 545 to check site availability and book a spot.

Un-powered and powered sites, with water, toilets, showers, BBQ, playground and dump point.

Rotary Park — Rose St, Echuca

Overnight stays are available for self-contained RVs.

A donation of $10 per vehicle to the Echuca Moama Rotary Club helps maintain the park and supports Rotary community services.

Public dump point and water are available for a donation. Dog friendly.

Benarca Campgrounds — Benarca Forest Rd, Moama

Nine campgrounds are located in the Murray Valley Regional Park, all offering impressive views of the Murray River. Tents, campers, and caravans pay a $6 booking fee.

Edward River Bridge Campgrounds — Duggans Rd, Mathoura

Located in the Gulpa Island area of the Murray Valley Regional Park, six campgrounds are suitable for tents, campers and caravans. There is a $6 booking fee.

No drinking water available, no flush toilets and dog friendly. Bookings 1300 072 757.

Swifts Creek — Swift Creek Rd, Mathoura

Located in the Murray Valley National Park, this camping spot has access to a boat ramp, toilets, picnic tables and barbecues.

There is no drinking water, and you are encouraged to bring your firewood or fuel. No pets other than certified assistance animals.

Gunbower Island — Cohuna

Australia’s largest inland island, with over 50 camping areas.

The Masters Landing Campground, north-west of Gunbower, is the pick with a boat ramp, toilets and picnic shelter.

Bush camping is available along the Murray River and Gunbower Creek.

Ulupna Island — Lower River Rd, Tocumwal

Located inside the Barmah National Park, this free camping site is an excellent spot for those who love nature and the tranquil sounds of the river.

Drop toilets are available, but dogs are not allowed.

Betts Beach — access via Simmie Rd, Echuca Village

Free camping, only 8km from Echuca Moama on the sandy banks of the Murray River.

There are no amenities, but dogs are allowed.
