THE PORT OF ECHUCA, A HISTORIC GEM NESTLED ALONG THE MURRAY RIVER, INVITES VISITORS ON A CAPTIVATING JOURNEY THROUGH AUSTRALIA’S INLAND RIVER SYSTEM AND PADDLE STEAMER TRADE HISTORY.
The interpretative centre, a beacon of knowledge, starts the experience by showcasing audiovisual models, displays and special exhibits that breathe life into the past and enlighten visitors about the region’s rich history.
You may stumble upon an engineer in the Kevin Hutchinson Steam Shed, eager to chat about steam power while stoking the boiler.
This unique encounter offers a peek into the paddle steamers' mechanical heart, making you feel part of the historical narrative.
The Port of Echuca's largest vessel, PS Pevensey, offers hour-long Murray River cruises.
The authentic PS Pevensey is unique because it is still powered up and down the river with its original steam engine.
Passengers can enjoy the summer breeze on the deck as they cruise the river, enjoying a cool drink from the onboard licensed bar and galley.
As the paddle steamer meanders along the river, passengers can soak in the scenic landscape and tune into the captain's commentary on points of interest.
The cruise highlights steam power’s pivotal role in the Port of Echuca’s development.
The nationally heritage-listed Echuca Wharf, the precinct’s centrepiece, allows visitors to explore a true-blue Aussie icon.
Daily guided tours dish out insights and amusing tales about the area’s pre-federation history.
The wharf offers some of the Murray River’s most stunning views.
The historic wharf was 332 metres long at its longest, but sadly, only a quarter of its original length remains.
The cargo shed above and below the wharf is a haven for families.
It houses a kids’ space, ensuring fun for all ages and making you feel welcome.
Kids’ adventure tours will run during the summer holidays, including a special take-home Port of Echuca after-dark gift with each child’s ticket.
The kids get to dress up and go into areas by torchlight that are not usually frequented at night, including along the Murray esplanade, the cargo shed, and underneath the Echuca Wharf, sharing stories about life back in the 1800s with tales of murder, mud pirates, smugglers and pickpockets.
Port After Dark tours are for everyone to journey back in time and discover the secrets of the past by lantern.
The interpretative centre and wharf are open daily from 9am to 5pm, with extended hours during peak seasons.
The Port of Echuca will be closed on Christmas Day, the only day it is closed for the year.
Entry is free, welcoming visitors and locals alike.
