Going bang: Jarrad Waite kicked a handy five goals against Seymour.

Jarrad Waite was back in a big way in Benalla last Saturday.

The former Carlton and North Melbourne target man was quick to get off the chain and get himself among the goals at Benalla Showgrounds, slotting two in the opening stages to gift the Saints an early lead.

His aerial ability and forward nous was on full display, the 39-year old using his body and height to cause headaches for the Lions’ defensive unit.

Waite finished his day with five goals, a handful of those from tricky angles.

At a glance

Goals: 5

Behinds: 3

Disposals: 15

Forward 50 marks: 7

Contested possessions: 12

But the scoreboard wasn’t the only area where Waite improved his side.

The big man took a game-high seven marks inside 50, getting on the end of some fine midfield work.

With a commanding forward target to aim at, Benalla’s inside 50 count shot up from previous weeks, the Saints registering 36 entries compared to a season average of 31.8.

Will Martiniello and Jordan Wolff led the way with six inside 50s apiece, Chris Welsh close behind with four.

Forward utility Brody Webster started the game well on Saturday, but continues to recover from an injury he suffered back in round one.

Webster’s speed, pressure and crumbing ability when combined with Waite’s strength and height in the Saints forward line could prove a dangerous proposition for opposition defences for the remainder of the season.
