A first-versus-last face-off is set for round six of the Goulburn Valley League season with reigning premier Echuca squaring off against Benalla (1-6) at Victoria Park on Saturday.

While the Saints are coming off a thrilling two-point win over Shepparton United last week, the Murray Bombers will be tipped to improve their record to 7-0 heading into the GVL bye.

But with ex-AFL star Jarrad Waite and gun super-boot Josh Mellington waiting down back, and leading GVL ruckman Josh Marchbank looming in the absence of Kane Morris, there are still hurdles to clear for the reigning premier.

Murray Bombers coach Sam Reid is looking at the clash as an opportunity for the side’s younger brigade to stand tall.

“Kane Morris is out for around six weeks, so that will give our younger rucks an opportunity,” Reid said.

“If Cam Valentine passes training that will be handy having him back in, we'll need our backs to lift against (Jarrad) Waite and (Josh) Mellington.”

Ruckman Liam Tenace and Echuca co-coach Andrew Walker’s inclusion will be up in the air at selection, though consistent performer Mitch Wales looks poised to return to the line-up.

“We don't want Benalla to get the jump on us, we want the opportunity to use our run and carry game,” Reid said.

“There will be opportunity for a few of our young blokes to put their hand up this week.

“Obviously Noah Langborne's been in for the last few weeks, Tighe O'Brien made his debut last week, Tom Evans is off Pioneer duties so he's another putting his hand up.”

The first bounce of the clash at Victoria Park will take place at 2pm.
