Seymour has been one of the in-form teams of the season, with the Lions getting off to a roaring start in 2023.
Seymour is one of the three remaining undefeated teams in Goulburn Valley League, highlighted with a win over last year’s grand finalist Euroa at the weekend.
What was one of the keys to Seymour’s victory over the Pies?
Efficiency.
According to GVL Data, Seymour ranks number one in the competition for scoring efficiency – and by a wide margin.
The Lions are converting on 55.7 per cent of their forward 50 entries, by far the highest rate of any side in the league.
Echuca ranks second at 48.3 per cent, with Seymour the only team punching above the 50 per cent mark.
That efficiency proved to be one of the deciding factors in the Lions’ impressive home win over the Magpies on Saturday at Kings Park.
Seymour had 38 total inside 50s, kicking 18.7 on those entries – a conversion rate of 65 per cent, even higher than its season average.
Euroa meanwhile had significantly more inside 50s with – 49 – but those entries did not convert to the scoreboard.
The Magpies kicked 12.8 at a scoring rate of 41 per cent – far below Seymour’s mark.
The Lions have only gone inside 50 122 times for the season – ranked eighth in the league – but they have kicked the third-most goals (41) and are the second-highest scoring side behind Echuca.
It wasn’t just in the attacking arc that Seymour outperformed Euroa, it was around the ground too.
The Lions had a kicking efficiency of 71 per cent to Euroa’s 64, and the Lions have had a better rate of overall disposal efficiency than their opponents in all three of their games.
Seymour had five players with a disposal efficiency of 90 per cent or higher – Seamus Feery, Jay Eager, Tom O'Sullivan, Thomas Davey and Cain Murray – compared to Euroa’s lone player to hit that threshold, Zac Gleeson.
