Star on the rise: Seymour utility Riley Mason enjoyed a breakout season in 2022.

If Seymour young gun Riley Mason was a stock, the stockbrokers’ advice would be to buy now.

Getting a consistent opportunity at senior level in 2022, Mason has quickly cemented himself in the side, before breaking out into one of the Goulburn Valley League’s best young players in the second half of the season.

A Swiss army knife of sorts for Lions coach Ben Davey, the young gun could be seen across half forward, half back and on the wing at different stages, with his silky skills and incredible fitness trademarks of his budding game.

His feats in 2022 have seen him nominated for the GVL’s Rising Star Award, further solidifying just how far he has come.

So through the power of GVL Data let’s have a closer look at what made Mason tick this season.

In season 2022, Mason averaged 21.2 disposals, 8.8 marks, 5.6 handball receives, 3.8 inside-50s and 1.4 goals per game.

These numbers show just how consistent and versatile the utility was throughout the season, as he managed to impact the game in a number of different ways.

But the statistic that stood out the most was his ability to take marks.

A reflection of his fitness and willingness to work hard, Mason took the third most marks of any player in the competition this season, sitting behind seasoned guns Lachlan Smith and Ruory Kirkby.

Featuring in all 18 of Seymour’s matches, his campaign was littered with highlights.

From kicking three goals on two occasions, in round one against Benalla and round 14 against Kyabram, to topping 30 disposals three times, he was a model of consistency all year long.

But he arguably saved his best for last, registering 28 disposals and kicking two goals in the Lions’ big win over Shepparton United at Deakin Reserve.

So while the Lions unfortunately missed the finals this season, with Mason continuing to grow, the future is certainly bright at Kings Park.
