A bumbling gunman remains on the run after accidentally setting himself on fire and failing to injure three people he targeted.

Police are after two shooters who are believed to be responsible for firing at a number of individuals on a street in Auburn, in Sydney's west, on Wednesday afternoon.

The duo fled in a getaway vehicle, but CCTV footage shows one of the men setting his feet on fire when the pair attempt to burn the car.

The video shows two masked men sprinting from the car once it is alight before one notices his feet are on fire.

He appears to stop in pain before both flee into a public park.

Detective Superintendent Rob Toynton said none of the three people who were fired upon had any injuries, but the shooter had come off worse for wear.

"But a number of shots were fired in a public place, which is very concerning," he said.

"Police have received vision that showed one of the offenders from the shooting set the vehicle on fire, but during that setting the vehicle on fire he's actually caused himself a significant injury by setting himself on fire as well."

A second possible getaway car has been sent for forensic testing.

The shooting is thought to be targeted, but police would not reveal the would-be victims' identities.

The trio were not co-operating with police, Det Supt Toynton said.

"That's not going to dissuade us in our efforts to put people before the court because you can't shoot guns in public streets without expecting the full force of NSW Police."
