The threat from a large bushfire burning on Sydney's Northen Beaches has been downgraded but residents are being warned about "ember attacks".

The NSW Rural Fire Service says an 80-hectare blaze is burning eastward near Cromer Heights, warning embers will be blown long distances which might affect homes before the main fire front.

The service earlier issued an emergency warning at 3pm AEST on Saturday, telling people on Pinduro Place, Jersey Place, Maybrook Avenue, Kirrang St and Lady Penryhn Drive in the Cromer Heights area they were at risk.

"Seek shelter now or as the fire approaches to protect yourself from the fire. It is too late to leave," the service had said in a statement.

As of 4.23pm AEST, the fire was downgraded to "watch and act" as firefighters and waterbombing aircraft work to slow its spread.
