An Australian Federal Police employee has been suspended following an alleged attack that resulted in them being charged with attempted murder.

The man is alleged to have stabbed a person with a knife during an incident in the northern Canberra suburb of Gunghalin on Friday night.

They faced ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm and aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

However, the man was then charged with attempted murder on Monday; the same day the AFP suspended them.

The Australian Federal Police released two brief statements on the arrest, stating only that the charges had been laid on an employee and that the person had been suspended.

The AFP did not reveal whether the person was a police officer.

"The AFP is committed to transparency," the statement read.

"No further comment will be made."
