A manhunt is under way after a house was peppered with bullets overnight, leaving a man seriously injured from four gunshot wounds to various parts of his body.

Police are working to determine if the attack on Wednesday night is linked to an organised crime dispute among Sydney underworld figures.

The 28-year-old victim was found with gunshot wounds about 10.50pm in Winston Hills, near Parramatta in the city's west.

He was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition and remains under police guard.

Specialist forensic police were on Thursday morning still examining the crime scene where numerous bullet holes were visible at the front of a suburban home in a quiet cul-de-sac.

The circumstances pointed to a targeted shooting but it was too early to tell if it was gang-related, police told AAP.

Links to a car fire in nearby Northmead are also being investigated as detectives work to find those responsible for the shooting.

An SUV was found alight about 11pm and could not be salvaged, despite firefighters' best efforts.

Sydney was hit with dozens of tit-for-tat gangland shootings beginning in 2020 spurred by a war between rival crime organisations.

The public attacks included five targeted shootings during a week in mid-July.

But there has been a lull in the carnage for much of 2024 after a series of arrests, which investigators say have helped dismantle one of the major gangs behind the violence.
