Residents on a series of streets in northern Sydney have been told to take shelter immediately from a large bushfire as it is "too late to leave".

The NSW Rural Fire Service issued an emergency warning at 3pm AEST on Saturday, telling people on Pinduro Place, Jersey Place, Maybrook Avenue, Kirrang Street, and Lady Penryhn Drive in the Cromer Heights area that they are at risk.

"Seek shelter now or as the fire approaches to protect yourself from the fire. It is too late to leave."

The service said embers would be blown long distances, starting spot fires which could impact homes before the main fire front.

Firefighters and waterbombing aircraft are working in the area to slow the spread.
