The Shepparton BMX Track is getting an extension after Greater Shepparton City Council awarded a new contract at its August meeting.

The $1.7 million contract was awarded to local company Moretto Building to build a multi-use events pavilion.

This project is funded via the Victorian Government's Regional Sporting Infrastructure Program.

The project includes a new two-storey multi-use pavilion, an upgrade of the track, start hill and broadcasting enhancements as well as a velodrome lighting upgrade.

The motion to award the contract was put forward by Cr Fern Summer and seconded by Cr Ben Ladson.

“It’s really great to see a local company win this tender,” Cr Summer said.

Cr Ladson thanked the Victorian Government for its funding.

“I just want to thank the government for this funding, it is $1.7 million,” he said.

“This facility will set us on the world stage for hosting international events.”

Cr Anthony Brophy highlighted the importance of uplifting regional sport following the cancellation of the Commonwealth Games.

“After the disappointment of the Commonwealth Games backflip by the state government, it is pleasing to see that the state government has now honoured their financial commitment to some of the sporting infrastructure projects,” Cr Brophy said.

Cr Greg James congratulated the local company for being awarded the contract.

“It’s also great to see that, as Cr Summer said, Moretto Building are the successful contractors,” he said.

Mayor Shane Sali said the council had remained committed to sporting facility upgrades.

“On the back of the cancellation of the Commonwealth Games, we were still very committed to getting as much as we possibly could out of that from an infrastructure perspective,” he said.

“This is a piece of infrastructure that will be built that will enhance that precinct to be, in my opinion, the best BMX facility in regional Australia.

“It's exciting for that precinct, and it's exciting for those user groups.”

The motion was carried unopposed.
