1899 referendum event a success

Last month a group of residents were treated to a “morning with a difference” at the Corowa Oddfellows Hall.

The Corowa District Historical Society hosted a panel of five eminent people on July 8 who discussed the 1899 referendum marking its 125th anniversary along with the 1893 Corowa Federation conference and John Quick.

Who really was the “Father of Federation” you may ask? There wasn’t a conclusive answer!

One question from the floor implied John Quick, the mover of that significant motion at the Corowa Conference should have that title. A member of the panel said it was Henry Parkes who reignited the movement so rightly holds the title while another felt there were several fathers!

In addition to the panel speakers, the audience was entertained by Sing Australia, who sang all verses of our national anthem and a song composed by former Corowa High Music teacher Catherine Downie.

Colin Milner stunned the audience with his amazing rendition of Ave Australia, while Matt Harvey demonstrated his multi-skills by singing his own composition, “This Land,” and accompanying himself on his guitar.

Matt also proposed this song as a possible national anthem. There was a pleasing attendance from both sides of the border, which was fitting for a celebration of an event that significantly affected border people.

President Gwyneth Handberg brought the morning to a close by thanking all for attending and Sing Australia for their generous input.

Gwyneth also thanked Matt Harvey for organising the event and the speakers Bede Harris, Colin Milner, Ian Killey, and Michele Matthews, who joined us via Zoom. A special thank you to Secretary Heather Hall for her sterling contribution to the organisation.

Several members of the historical society, together with panel members, adjourned to the Royal Hotel for further conversation and an enjoyable lunch.
