“It was a good race day. An estimated 900 people attended and everybody was happy. There were a lot of entrants in the fashions.”

That’s how Corowa Race Club Secretary Gail Law summed up the popular Melbourne Cup long weekend race meeting at Corowa Race Club on Monday.

The Millinery Award went to Corowa’s Libby Ash.

It was a six-race meeting instead of the intended seven event program. “We were a little disappointed with the smaller number of entries but with so many race meetings this week and over 10 days, it’s a busy time for everyone,” Ms Law said.

The race meeting featured a new $35,000 prize money race ‘Federation Stakes’ as part of the spring racing calendar.

It was won by the Benalla-trained Olivia Osborn Pretty Penguin, with Hannah Edgley on board. Corowa Race Club President Brian Scolyer made the presentation to the happy connections.

With many entrants, the fashions certainly had heads turning. In the junior fashions, dual prize winners resulted. “They were twin boys – how do you pick a winner!” Ms Law wondered.

Federation Mayor Cheryl Cook and Hannah Wileman of Enve Hair Creations had the challenging task of judging the fashions on the field.

“It was a beautiful day, perfect weather and entrants, of all ages, were dressed in beautiful attire – it was wonderful to see,” our new mayor said.

“A great deal of thought went into it by entrants. It was hard work deciding all the winners.”

The Lady of the Day winner, Joanne Rhodes, was so beautifully co-ordinated, complementing the spring racing fashion season.

Corowa Race Club’s next race meeting will be the holiday race meeting on Saturday, December 28.
