Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting Australian women and is a cause close to Seymour product Sophie Locke’s heart.
Now, Sophie has stepped up as a Breast Cancer Network Australia ambassador.
After losing her mum, Sarah Locke, to breast cancer in August last year, Sophie played her first game of AFLW, kicking the first goal of the season in her honour.
“Mum was the reason we went for Hawthorn … she knew how much I loved the sport … I wanted to tribute that to Mum,” Sophie said.
Since then, Sophie has gone from strength to strength, taking it all in her stride and using her platform as an elite athlete for good.
Encouraged by her dad, Sophie made the decision to become an ambassador for Breast Cancer Network Australia. She will be putting on her running shoes for the annual Carmen’s Fun Run on Sunday, February 19.
“I’ve got quite a following because of my story,” Sophie said.
“That first game got so much coverage, Dad was like ‘this is an opportunity to jump on’.”
Breast Cancer Network Australia advocates for those affected by breast cancer by improving the care, treatment and support systems for those affected by breast cancer and influencing the creation of a stronger healthcare system.
“I like what they are doing, I like their cause and what they are doing for people who are going through breast cancer and their support network,” Sophie said.
“I think if it’s something you really like, you should try and support that and be a part of it.”
As an AFL player turned ambassador, Sophie joins fellow AFLW and AFL players Sophie Conway, Oskar Baker, Jarrod Berry, Thomas Berry and Hugh Greenwood in using their platform to promote Breast Cancer Network Australia.
“Quite a few girls on other [AFLW] teams have contacted me about losing a parent … It’s really made me realise I’m not the only one going through this,” Sophie said.
“It’s good to have someone who knows how you feel that you can bounce off or go to.
“I think being part of a club is amazing because you have got the support crew around you, everyone is there for you.”
Those close to Sophie are keen to put on their running shoes and show their support, including her dad, former Seymour Football Netball Club president Stuart Locke, who will be running the 10km.
Others will be raising funds and joining in remotely, completing the run wherever they may be.
Sophie will also be backed by plenty of Seymour locals, as well as those who were close to Sarah, with one family friend even making the pledge to double the donations that Sophie raises.
So far, Sophie has managed to raise $5000, with hopes that number will continue to rise.
“It’s crazy how much we have raised,” she said.
The fun run will be held at Elsternwick Park on Sunday, February 19.
