Lockington’s Travis Fimmel has earned his first AACTA award nomination.

The AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) awards were founded in 1958 and are presented annually.

Fimmel, 44, features among six contenders for the lead actor in a drama category for his role in Black Snow.

He plays Detective James Cormack, who follows the cold case murder of Isabel Baker when the opening of a time capsule unearths a secret.

Fimmel earned rave reviews in the Australian production, which was filmed in the Whitsundays region.

Other contenders in the lead actor category are Tim Draxl (In Cold Blood), Joel Lago (Erotic Stories), Sam Reid (The Newsreader), Richard Roxburgh (Bali 2002) and Hugo Weaving (Love Me).

Fimmel earned acclaim for his role as Ragnar Lothbrok in the television series Vikings from 2013 to 2017.

Black Snow, which featured an ensemble cast including Brooke Satchwell, Erik Thomson, Alexander England, Rob Carlton, Kym Gyngell, Jemmason Power, Molly Fatnowna and Talijah Blackman-Corowa, was also nominated in the best TV drama category.

In that category it is up against Bay Of Fires, Bump, Erotic Stories, Love Me and The Newsreader.

Fimmel’s co-stars Satchwell and England have also been nominated.

Satchwell is in the best supporting actress in a drama category against Alysia Debnam-Carey (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart), Marg Downey (The Newsreader), Michelle Lim Davidson (The Newsreader), Heather Mitchell (Love Me) and Leah Purcell (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart).

England is up against Tim Draxl (Erotic Stories), William McInnes (The Newsreader), Bob Morley (Love Me), Hunter Page-Lochard (The Newsreader) and Guy Pearce (The Clearing) in the best supporting actor in a drama category.

Black Snow is also nominated for best screenplay in television, best production design in television and best sound in television.

The Newsreader dominated the awards nominations with the second season of the ABC production up for 15 prizes, while internationally-renowned Colin from Accounts and Deadloch each snagged 10 nominations.

AACTA chief executive officer Damian Trewhella congratulated all of the year’s nominees, saying the remarkable talent shaping Australia’s vibrant screen landscape was unparalleled.

“Each nomination and achievement stands as a testament to the talent that elevate our nation’s storytelling on the global stage,” Mr Trewhella said.

“We look forward to celebrating the incredible impact our productions and screen practitioners continue to make within the industry and beyond."

The film and television component of the AACTA Awards will be presented at the Gold Coast on Saturday, February 10, 2024.
