Christmas is a time for giving, and Riverina Food Share is calling on local residents to lend a helping hand to those across our community currently struggling with food security.
Formerly known as Finley Food Bank, Riverina Food Share provides a service each Thursday from the Finley Showgrounds.
It allows people in need to receive non-perishable food items.
Riverina Food Share’s Davina Vidler said it has been a difficult year for many in the region due to ongoing floods, increased prices and many who have lost jobs and homes.
“There are many who won’t be able to have a Christmas,” she said.
“We are calling on you to help, by simply purchasing one extra item at Finley IGA and dropping it in the trolley at the service desk.”
Mrs Vidler has organised for a flyer to be letterbox dropped to residents in the Finley township about the wishing well-style fundraising at IGA.
She said while the group welcomes weekly donations from K and A Foods, Finley Bakery and Patisserie, Tuppal Dairy and Berrigan Bakehouse, more help is needed at this time of year.
“We also have several money tins around town, if people would like to donate financially,” she said.
“Currently we have one at IGA, The Country Club Hotel, Nicki's Tea Pot Café, Bay Laurel Coffee Shop and the Rotary Op Shop (across the road from the Finley Post Office).
“Also, if anyone would like to donate time on a Thursday, that would be greatly appreciated.”
Riverina Food Share will take a break over the Christmas period.
The last food share day of the year will be December 15, and the first in 2023 will be January 12.
