John and Robyn Gibbs attended their first Benalla Show in the 1960s.
Having moved away from the Rose City, the couple was determined to get to this year’s show after missing out last year when flooding saw the annual event cancelled.
“We live in Mallacoota now,” John said.
“We came here this time last year only to find out the show was washed out.”
Robyn said she was having a great time but had hoped to see a merry-go-round, which was the highlight for her at the show when she was young.
“I used to, every year as a kid, come here, and I would always go on the merry-go-round, probably two or three times,” Robyn said.
She said the main difference she noticed from the shows she attended as a teenager was the horse events.
“The horses weren’t as big of a thing. They weren’t so many,” she said,
“They did car displays back then.
“It was always the grand parade and all the displays of the cars and the caravans and that sort of thing.
“But it was good to see that all the school exhibits and all the cakes and everything are still here. So that was good.”
She said her only disappointment was that she couldn’t try them.
Luckily, there was a great variety of food and drink vans and stalls on site, so the couple wouldn’t go hungry.
John and Robyn said it was a great trip down memory lane, and they can’t wait to return next year.
