The Australian Electoral Commission is seeking volunteers in Cobram and Yarrawonga for the upcoming Voice to Parliament referendum.
The Voice to Parliament referendum, to be held Saturday, October 14, is an initiative currently being pushed by the Albanese Government, and voting is compulsory for eligible voters.
The AEC is looking for 70 volunteers within the Nicholls electorate to help ensure a smooth voting process.
As well as Cobram and Yarrawonga, volunteers are needed in Rochester, Kyabram and Shepparton.
AEC State Manager Nye Coffey, who oversees the operations in Victoria, said now that the referendum date has been confirmed, he’s hoping people will get involved.
“This is a chance for people to earn some extra money, help deliver the vote for the community and be a part of the first referendum this century,” he said.
“There are a few specific areas that we urgently need people to work with us. If we can’t recruit people locally, we’re hoping people from neighbouring towns may consider travelling a short distance to help allow all Victorian communities to vote locally,” he said.
Mr Coffey said the AEC is seeking staff who are good with people, have an eye for detail, and, most importantly, can put personal political opinion to one side.
“No previous election work experience is necessary, and full training is provided. You do need to be able to take an impartial and neutral approach to your work,” he said.
“In keeping with the AEC’s commitment to integrity, it’s absolutely essential that people working on the referendum are able to remain impartial on the issue.”
