Alan and Lorraine Cook retire from Broadford Cemetery Trust

Alan and Lorraine Cook have retired from the Broadford Cemetery Trust after decades of community volunteering at its best.

Living next door to the cemetery, the Cooks’ front door has been the destination for hundreds of inquiries since 1991.

Alan served on the trust for 31 years of dedicated and loyal service and Lorraine for 17 years from 2001 to 2018.

For many years the couple ran a successful motor repair business in Broadford while also participating in sporting and community activities.

Current trust secretary Brian O’Dwyer said the Broadford community was appreciative of Alan as the ‘face of the cemetery’.

“(He) met most of the visitors, showed them around and was able to assist with their inquiries,” Mr O’Dwyer said.

“Alan was particularly passionate in restoring the very old graves that had fallen into disrepair, underpinning them and making dangerous graves safe. He spent many hours cleaning the old marble headstones and repairing the engraving.”
