Aldi building begins

The construction of an Aldi supermarket building along the Murray Valley Highway on Monday, September 9.

After several years of back and forth, the walls of a Yarrawonga Aldi supermarket have been assembled with construction progressing swiftly and roadworks to begin in due course.

Residents travelling along the Murray Valley Highway will have noticed preliminary site works and construction of a building on the parcel of land adjacent to Bunnings with the progress of the development to push forward quickly now minor intersection changes on the entrance at Franc Drive alongside of the development have been approved by Regional Roads Victoria.

A spokesperson confirmed that a new left turn lane on both the Murray Valley Highway and Franc Drive will be built to improve the capacity of the intersection so more vehicles are able to turn out at the same time.

Works are expected to take around three months (weather permitting) and will improve sightlines and make it safer to turn into and out of the intersection.

These works are being managed and delivered by the developer, not the Department of Transport, as part of the planning permit for the new precinct.

When developers are delivering works on the road network, they are required to meet the strict standards set out by DTP’s technical guidelines.

Executive Director of Loddon Mallee Hume at the Department of Transport and Planning Anthony Judd confirmed the roadworks saying “We’ve approved plans to make it easier and safer for everyone to access the new retail precinct.”

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Graeme Emonson PSM said that it is exciting to see the commencement of works for Aldi in Yarrawonga.

“It is great to see businesses coming into the shire, creating more jobs, and boosting the economy in the region,” Mr Emonson said.

Job employment site ‘Seek’ and Aldi careers have both advertised for a Duty Store Manager, and Retail Assistant – Yarrawonga with distinct knowledge that these are both for a ‘new store opening’.

The job ads also state that the Yarrawonga store will be “opening approximately December 2024 with an actual date TBC”.

The Yarrawonga Chronicle contacted Aldi HQ to enquire when works shall be complete and residents can expect the store to open with a spokesperson responding with a generic statement and no confirmation of dates.

“We are excited to bring our unique shopping experience to Yarrawonga and will update the community as our plans progress," an Aldi spokesperson said.
