A man allegedly armed with a knife has chased cyclists on a Shepparton bike path.

Shepparton police Sergeant Darren Wagstaff said police responded to reports of a man chasing people with a knife on the bike path in the Princess Park area about 8.15pm on Tuesday, January 31.

Police were also told the man had also been masturbating in front of people in the area.

Police arrested a 53-year-old man in the scrub area off Welsford St.

When he was arrested he had a knife and a small axe on him, Sgt Wagstaff said.

He was taken to Goulburn Valley Health after his arrest for a medical assessment.

Sgt Wagstaff said police had been told a man was carrying a knife as he chased two men on bicycles on the bike path along the Goulburn River between Aquamoves and the Shepparton side at the Causeway between Shepparton and Mooroopna.

He said police did not know if the man attacked the men or whether he got near them.

Police are keen to talk to the two cyclists to see what had happened to them.

They also want to talk to anyone who saw the man in the area at around that time.

The man is described as Caucasian, not wearing a shirt, and wearing blue shorts and glasses.

Anyone who saw the man should contact Sgt Wagstaff at Shepparton Police Station on 5820 5777.
