On a mission: Scotty Vesty is on a mission to ensure those struggling with their mental health aren’t alone.

Scotty Vesty is on a mission to bring mental health awareness to regional communities.

The Finley resident founded the group Around Mates, which holds barbecues in regional towns in NSW and Victoria in an effort to bring people together to help battle loneliness and mental illness.

For Mr Vesty it is a personal fight.

“I’ve lived with depression and anxiety since I was 15 and I kept it hidden for 17 years. I’ve been through a lot in my life and a lot of that has got to do with not asking for help,” Mr Vesty said.

“I decided to start this group for those people who are struggling or battling alone to feel safe.”

However Mr Vesty stresses you don’t need to be alone or suffering mental health problems to join.

“If people are new to the area and want to make new friends or mates or just want to grow their existing circle of mates they are also welcome,” he said.

Mr Vesty plans to visit 28 towns in the two states, including Cobram, Barooga, Yarrawonga, Tocumwal and Deniliquin.

Mr Vesty said mental health was a big issue and needed to be talked about.

“If I had asked for help all those years ago, many of those things that have happened may not have happened.”

Mr Vesty said anyone regardless of age or gender could come along and there was no pressure to discuss personal problems or situations if they don’t wish to.

For those thinking about coming along, Mr Vesty said they would find a safe and non-judgemental environment.

“For some people it’s hard to get out of their comfort zone but take that first step and come along.”

Mr Vesty said any help with sponsorship which would go to fuel and supplies for the barbecue would be greatly appreciated.
