With great pride, Shepparton Art Museum has announced that two pioneering projects have been shortlisted for the prestigious 2024 Victorian Museums and Galleries Awards.
Broadly, SAM was spotlighted for its innovative approaches and contributions to the regional arts and culture sector.
Specifically, the eye-catching exhibition The ARNDT Collection: From One World to Another, has been acknowledged in the Small Project of the Year (Galleries) category.
This exhibition, celebrated for its inventive layout and connection to Greater Shepparton’s diverse culture, showcased the works of renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso and Gilbert and George, sourced from the private collection of Matthias Arndt and Tiffany Wood-Arndt.
Its presentation from November 2023 to March 2024 marked a significant first for its collection in an Australian public institution, asserting SAM’s role in bringing international art to regional audiences.
SAM’s Creative Arts Storytelling program caught the jury’s eye under the First Nations Project of the Year category.
In partnership with the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project’s OLLY program, the youth-centric initiative engaged emerging First Nations artists to conduct a series of after-school workshops.
The CAS program aimed to develop artistic skills among local youth in various areas, such as filmmaking and poetry, strengthening SAM’s dedication to fostering creativity and building connections within the community.
“The SAM team works hard to deliver high-quality and unique experiences for the Shepparton and Goulburn Valley community and beyond,” SAM artistic director Danny Lacy said.
“We are delighted to be recognised for our outstanding efforts by the leading Victorian peak bodies, Australian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria and Public Galleries Association of Victoria.”
This year marks the 31st annual celebration of these awards, continuing a legacy of acknowledging excellence in the museum and gallery sector.
The winners will be unveiled on Tuesday, October 1.
