Artworks evoke a sense of nostalgia

There’s a new artistic exhibition in the Rose City which might bring up some fond memories for local people.

Nostalgic Reflections by Beechworth's Therese Shanley is the latest Benalla Art Gallery Shop exhibition.

It will be on display throughout the month of July.

It showcases hand-painted drypoint prints that depict the people, places, and objects that surround and inspire her.

Ms Shanley finds beauty in the simplicity of her day-to-day life and draws on memory to create feelings of nostalgia, calmness, and positivity.

Raised in a large family on a farm in Myrrhee, by a creative mother, she developed skills in knitting, sewing, and crocheting at an early age.

Drawing and painting quickly became her passions and she completed a Bachelor of Art/Fine Art, majoring in painting, at La Trobe University.

She then embarked on several years of travel across Europe, Indonesia, and Australia, documenting her experiences with a camera and sketchbook.

While primarily focused on painting for many years, Ms Shanley rediscovered her love for printmaking when she met master printmaker Bill Young in 2017.

Her talent has been recognised with two ‘Works on Paper’ awards and she has been a finalist in prestigious art prizes including the Sir John Sulman Prize 2023, the Peeble Print Prize, and the Portia Geach Memorial Award.

Her artwork has been featured in more than 25 group and solo exhibitions in North East Victoria, and cross Australia.

She has also contributed to the Wangaratta Art Gallery, and numerous private collections.

Benalla Art Gallery Director Eric Nash said the exhibition is an uplifting selection of printed works by a talented, local artist.

"Visitors to Benalla Art Gallery often appreciate the opportunity to view works created by artists from, or residing in north east Victoria,“ Mr Nash said.

“I'm sure Therese's works will be similarly admired."

Ms Shanley said she was excited to exhibit in Benalla.

"The Benalla Art Gallery is such a great gallery with a wonderful opportunity for small exhibitions in the Gallery's shop,“ she said.

“I'm thrilled to be part of it."
