Aunty Cheryl Cooper honoured for beautiful Aboriginal art on display at Benalla Health

Members of Benalla’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group recently came together with other local groups to honour Aunty Cheryl Cooper.

Aunty Cheryl is an Aboriginal Textile Artist, who presented one of her amazing pieces to the community.

It currently hangs in Benalla Health’s Ray Sweeney Centre for all to enjoy.

The piece is called ‘Reflections’and was created as mixed media textile art.

A special barbecue lunch was held for Aunty Cheryl in June with the Benalla Health Communities Team and the Benalla Council Community Services Team in attendance.

Aunty Cheryl spoke at the event and described the many facets of the artwork.

“This piece represents my country, a keeping place,” she said.

“It is about looking after people’s mental health and for them to take time to breathe and listen to nature.’’
