AusNet has announced a $10 million fund to support recovery efforts and enhance energy resilience in communities severely impacted by electricity reliability challenges and recent catastrophic storms.

In addition to the guaranteed service level payment and prolonged power outage payments already being provided, the Energy Resilience Community Fund will collaborate closely with relevant local councils to ensure effectiveness and appropriate administration.

AusNet chief executive David Smales said helping communities in the short and long term was a big priority for AusNet.

“The recent storms caused unprecedented damage to local electrical infrastructure, which unfortunately resulted in prolonged outages,” he said.

“And it is predicted these weather events are becoming more frequent and severe. In fact, this was the third catastrophic storm to affect some of these communities in as many years.

“AusNet is committed to helping communities get back on their feet in the short term, but we also recognise the importance of working with local governments and their communities to strengthen community infrastructure and businesses and help ensure they are better prepared to withstand future weather events.”

AusNet is also making other long-term investments in its electricity infrastructure, aiming to enhance its ability to withstand more weather events.

The fund aims to recognise the urgent need to support communities now and into the future by focusing on three key areas: immediate support, community infrastructure and resilience, and small business energy resilience.

Local governments and AusNet are collaborating closely to finalise applications and funding guidelines and ensure the effective management of the fund.

Mr Smales said AusNet would continue supporting communities recovering from recent storms and electricity reliability challenges.

“AusNet acknowledges the remarkable resilience and community spirit demonstrated in the face of adversity. We stand with the communities we serve, offering our support as they rebuild and recover,” Mr Smales said.
