Moira Shire Council has released its Friday, January 26 Australia Day District Town events.

Australia Day is typically celebrated with barbecues and picnics, while councils hand out awards to members of the public and community organisations for services rendered.

A key part of the Australia Day events is the swearing in of new citizens.

Moira Shire Council chair of the panel of administrators John Tanner said he looked forward to swearing in Australia’s newest citizens.

“Extending a warm welcome to new citizens in Moira Shire is a significant responsibility and one of the most special honours in my role,” he said.

“I encourage everyone to join us in welcoming our newest Australians into our community.”

Cobram Rotary Club board member Neil Kerr is helping organising the 2024 events at the Cobram Civic Centre and is hoping as many people as possible come out and celebrate Australia Day.

“We want to encourage people to come to the Australia Day event on Friday, January 26,” he said.

“We have the pipe band playing and music and singing by Nicky Goldsworthy and we have the awards of course.”
