When Cameron Burgess purchased his Baddaginnie home last year he had no idea it was susceptible to flooding.
He found out the hard way in the recent October floods when water from Folly Creek inundated his property.
While in the process of cleaning up and recovering from that, exactly one month later, it flooded again.
Mr Burgess said the issue had been reported to Benalla Rural City Council, and he hoped there was something that could be done to prevent future flooding.
“There is a creek just up from us, Folly Creek, it goes under the road a bit further up,” Mr Burgess said.
“The culvert there isn’t big enough to take the amount of water that comes through when it rises.
“And with the La Niná summer ahead we could get flooded again.
“I think I’m at the lowest point in Baddaginne. In the recent flooding a couple of other properties got some water under the house and in the shed.
“But I think mine was the only one to go under.
“We’ll have to spend money out the front to try and build some kind of levy to stop it flooding again.
“But if council can do something further up at the creek to stop it happening again that would be awesome.”
A Benalla Rural City Council spokesperson said it provided assistance to protect the community of Baddaginnie from becoming isolated by catastrophic road damage, through providing water pumping infrastructure during the October flood event.
“Due to the severity of the flooding event, there were unfortunately a number of properties inundated in Baddaginnie,” the spokesperson said.
“Council will always ensure public safety and will attempt to protect private property where we can.”
