Volunteers were out in force during the long weekend with Benalla and district once again raising tens of thousands for the Good Friday Appeal.

Benalla CFA kicked off its fundraising efforts on Thursday, April 6, with members collecting donations at the intersection of Bridge and Nunn Sts.

Volunteers then spent Good Friday either collecting donations outside McDonald’s, at the fire station, or at the Benalla gardens; as well as travelling the streets letting residents know they had arrived with a burst of sirens.

The overall figure for money raised in Benalla was $45,008.

There was, of, course all the local Good Friday Appeals with Tatong; and Devenish and Dookie once again raising amazing amounts for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

The popular Tatong Good Friday Appeal took in $18,594.

The generous people of Devenish and Dookie raised an amazing $120,248.

Our smaller townships also added to the overall figure raised:

  • Glenrowan — $8620;
  • Thoona — $314; and
  • Violet Town — $5666.

Just down the road volunteers in Wangaratta also had a great day raising a total of $104,929.

Total donations across Victoria broke the appeal’s record with an outstanding $23,061,320 donated.

Good Friday Appeal chairperson Penny Fowler said giving for the kids was what the Good Friday Appeal was all about.

“What big, generous hearts Victorians have had this year,” Ms Fowler said.

“The appeal continues to shine a light on the very best in our community and this year’s appeal is no exception.

“We are incredibly grateful to communities in Victoria and all the volunteers for digging deep for The Royal Children’s Hospital.”

CFA members across the state raised a good portion of that figure with brigades bringing in $1,606,287.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan thanked and congratulated all participating brigades across Victoria.

“Our members give up their time to serve their communities in times of need and it’s no surprise that their selflessness extends to worthy causes such supporting The Royal Children’s Hospital,” Mr Heffernan said.

“All members and their communities should be proud of what they’ve achieved for this year’s appeal, helping provide world-class care to sick kids.”
