Benalla’s Botanical Gardens has been included in a new list of inclusive and accessible walks in Victoria.

Scope, one of Australia’s largest disability service providers, has collaborated with Victoria Walks to audit a number of walks throughout the state to ensure they are accessible to people with disabilities.

And one of the first on that list is in one of the most picturesque parts of the Rose City.

Auditors from Scope with a range of different disabilities worked closely with auditors from Victoria Walks to examine every element – from terrain and distance to public transport and accessible bathrooms.

During a three-month period, 24 walks across Victoria were determined to be accessible for people with physical disabilities and mapped on Walking Maps.

Gwenda Campbell, one of Scope’s auditors, said the collaboration would help people with disabilities connect with their community and the people around them.

“It’s important for our community parks and walking paths to be accessible and safe for everyone,” Ms Campbell said.

“People with disabilities should have the same opportunities to gather in local parks as the rest of the community.”
