Beyond Blue is partnering with animal health company Zoetis to champion mental health and wellbeing initiatives in rural Australia.

Factors such as inflation, cost-of-living pressures, climate change and the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have underscored the importance of mental health support, particularly for farmers and rural communities.

The emphasis on positive mental health and wellbeing of regional Australians is because, according to research from the National Farmers Federation, nearly a third of farmers have reported a decline in their mental health.

Close to half of Australian farmers have experienced thoughts of self-harm or suicide, with feelings of loneliness and limited access to mental health services compounding these challenges.

Beyond Blue’s support services have provided a lifeline to those in distress. After contacting the service, most individuals reported feeling heard, understood, and less distressed, highlighting the positive impact of early intervention and support.

Lockington native, sports journalist and Beyond Blue ambassador Brad McEwan and his family have dealt with mental issues as he has tragically lost his brother and father to suicide.

Mr McEwan has been open about dealing with mental health issues and focusing on prioritising wellbeing, paying particular importance to regional areas.

“I grew up in an era where mental health wasn’t discussed. We as a society, particularly in rural areas, talk openly about physical issues we get from sport and work, but we didn’t talk about mental health and wellbeing,” he said.

“What I know about my family’s experiences is that everyone has stuff in their life; we all have physical issues at times, and most of us have problems with our wellbeing.

“We know now that we have to work on our mental health every day; just like we have to train in sports or physical activity, we must keep working at it.

“Someone is always listening, and if you are brave enough to open up, you are not only helping yourself, but you are helping others too.”

Zoetis has committed $800,000 over the last eight years to Beyond Blue’s services, which saw more than 300,000 individuals reach out for assistance in 2023.

In 2024, Zoetis has set a goal to raise an additional $100,000 by the end of the year for Beyond Blue.
