Big changes for Bendigo City Council ahead of elections

City of Greater Bendigo residents will notice some changes to current wards ahead of the local government elections later this month.

The changes came as a result of electoral structure reviews that aimed to ensure the compliance of 39 councils with the Local Government Act 2020.

Previously, the council had a multi-member structure — only three wards with three councillors for each.

This will now change to a single-member ward structure with nine wards.

In addition to the original wards of Eppalock, Lockwood and Whipstick, the six new wards include Epsom — which incorporates Elmore, Drummartin and Goornong — Axedale, Golden Square, Kennington, Lake Weerona and Ravenswood.

There are 24 candidates in the running across all nine wards in this year’s elections.

Sitting councillor Andrea Metcalf is the only candidate for the ward of Epsom, so residents within the ward will not need to vote in the coming elections.

Ballot packs for all wards went out between Monday, October 7, and Thursday, October 10.

By Friday, October 25, ballot packs will need to be in the mail or delivered to the election office by 6pm.

All results will be declared by Friday, November 15 at the latest.
