Bikers want to be seen to be safe

Critters are known for hiding in the dark spaces out of sight, but this bunch of bedazzled bikers’ goal is to be seen.

GV Social Riders have been spreading joy around the Goulburn Valley wearing all manner of fluffy character covers over their motorcycle helmets.

While adding smiles to dials is ticking one box on their list of intentions, it’s about more than that.

The mixed bunch of young and old, men and women, new and experienced riding enthusiasts are trying to improve road safety through social engagement.

As we move towards the prime holiday period at Easter and with increased traffic on the roads due to the school holidays, police are urging all motorists to keep their wits about them.

According to Victoria Police data released last week, there were 17 deaths on Victorian roads in April last year — including four motorcyclists — with three-quarters of those on regional roads.

Out of the 75 fatalities on Victorian roads so far this year (to April 3), 18 have been motorcyclists, which is three more than the five-year average, according to the TAC’s website.

With their furry headwear drawing attention from all directions, GV Social Riders are asking the question: “Can you see us now?”

“This holiday season we would like to wish all our locals and visitors to the area safe travels, but ultimately remind everyone it does not matter what we wear, you won’t see us unless you look,” group admin Possum Green said.

“If you do see us, feel free to give us a wave, a thumbs up or come have a chat.”

GV Social Riders performed a ‘Muppet Ride’ past Orrvale Primary School and Isabel Pearce Kindergarten by request on Friday, April 4, the last day of Term 1, much to the delight of the students who lined the fence to watch the shaggy-sheathed riders roar past.

The group is not paid or funded. It is made up of locals trying to make a difference and help create safer roads.

It welcomes all local riders with any level of experience, on any make or model of bike.
