A Benalla business owner leapt into action when a blood-covered dog attacked a family’s Labrador.
The business owner provided security camera footage of the incident, which can be viewed at www.benallaensign.com.au - however viewer discretion is advised.
The attack happened shortly after a husky was attacked in a Benalla garden on Tuesday, September 27.
Two dogs ran up to a family outside Tyrepower on Carier St with one attacking a Labrador. being walked by a young girl.
Tyrepower owner Chris Lewis-Williams said given the amount of blood on the dogs, he believed they would be the same ones that attacked the husky; however, this has not been confirmed.
Leaping into action after noticing the attack, Mr Lewis-Williams was able to pin one of the dogs down until Benalla Rural City Council rangers could attend and secure it.
The other dog ran into Tyrepower when Mr Lewis-Williams intervened.
Mr Lewis-Williams said luckily two police officers from Shepparton happened to be driving past and were able to pull over and assist.
"It was a normal day. We’d not long finished doing some tyres and were in the office doing paperwork,“ Mr Lewis-Williams said.
“Then James, who is our tyre tech, looked up and said, whoa, then we heard the commotion of the dogs barking.
“The family was retreating backwards, so we burst out the door and I ran at the dog.”
Seeing that the Labrador was being held by a young child and the family had a pram nearby, Mr Lewis-Williams knew he had to do something.
“I thought there was nothing I could do, but I reached over and I was able to grab it by the collar,” he said.
"It had a coat on, so I grabbed its coat and it went to run. I had to do a forward roll and it ended up underneath me and I squatted on top of it.
“That’s when the silver car appeared and it happened to be two detectives from Shepparton. I think they were just driving past.”
After restraining one dog, the other ran into Tyrepower.
Mr Lewis-Williams said the dogs seemed to have no interest in attacking any people, and were focused on the Labrador.
“Both dogs had had a lot of blood on them and around their mouths,” he said.
“It was only three to four minutes before two rangers from Benalla Rural City Council showed up.
“They said they’d been out looking for these dogs.”
Mr Lewis-Williams and his team then helped the council workers get the dogs into their van.
“Later in the day the council rangers came and asked for a copy of the video,” he said.
Mr Lewis-Williams said the owner quickly took the Labrador over to Rose City Vets, which is across the road from where the attack happened.
“Luckily the Lab was okay,” he said.
“The lady who owns the Labrador came in on Friday and dropped off a nice card saying thanks for helping.”
Council has confirmed that until the case is brought to court the animals will be held by the RSPCA.
