Five tables are still available for this weekend’s trivia fundraiser at the Seymour RSL.
It is an all-ages general knowledge event with host Damian Cavanagh hoping to see everybody from teenagers through to RSL veterans come join the fun and help raise some money to put towards the flood relief efforts.
The event is $20 per head, with the money being distributed to flood-affected people by the Seymour Lions Club.
“We really need to fill the place and make the most out of the fundraising efforts to get some money back into the community,” Mr Cavanagh said.
A long-time Seymour resident and natural entertainer, Mr Cavanagh decided to help the way he knew how after seeing the community affected by floods.
“I’ve been a one-man show for 20-odd years. I was working behind the bar at the Railway and the boss said to me ‘do you reckon you could do this, Cav?’ I said, ‘I reckon I could have a crack’.”
“Twenty-odd years later and I’m still doing it.
“It’s something I can do. I don’t have the trucks or the machinery to clear up, but I can raise some coin and get some money back into the community for those who really need it.”
Like so many others, Mr Cavanagh has been astounded by the generosity of people within the community over the past month.
“The community has been fantastic, people like Pro Turf Scapes, Australian Trenching and Excavations who ran around with their trucks off their own back doing their thing — I’ll be thanking them profusely when I get there on the night,” Mr Cavanagh said.
“It just shows you what a community Seymour is. It’s amazing that we can just come together.
“I was going through Maribyrnong not long ago and there is still c*** pilled up all over the place. Seymour has little piles of stuff, but a lot has been cleaned up because the community came together.”
Up for silent auction on the night are more than $1500 worth of prizes including a $100 voucher at Board Games and Battle Grounds, 12-month Xbox game pass memberships, BP fuel vouchers and an autographed Jack Reiwoldt Richmond Football Club jumper.
“There’s a tonne of prizes, more than I could expect, and I am really thankful to the community for pulling together,” Mr Cavanagh said.
“I need to fill those tables. I know $20 is $20 but … it’s only a couple of coffees.”
